When transporting a paddleboard you'll need a rack to strap the board to and some padding to keep from denting or dinging the board. The rack options in this SUP carrier comparison requires your car to have an existing roof rack with crossbars.
The simplest addition to a paddleboard specific rack is to add pads to your crossbars. This will help prevent any pressure damage to the board.
To get your board on your car, it's helpful to first get it on your head. Then you can slide the board onto the racks. Make sure to orient the board with the fins up and over the front of the car. That way if the board slips the fins will catch on the straps and prevent it from flying off the car.
If you have a second board you can use foam inserts to stack the boards or you can use a towel to pad each board from the other. You'll want to start with the biggest board on the bottom so that the fins don't overlap.
Use cam straps to strap the board to the car. Hold the cam and thread the other end of the strap under the bar on the far side of the car and throw it back over. Then thread it
under the bar on the side you started on.
Next, thread the strap up and through the cam fastener, pull the strap tight but not too tight as you don't want to damage your board. The camming mechanism will hold the strap in place.
The Yakima SUPDawg is built specifically to cradle a stand-up paddleboard. It fastens to your existing roof rack’s crossbars and has a padded area to securely hold the paddle board in place.
Integrated straps make it easy to secure the board by threading the strap through the cam mechanism and pulling it tight. The SUPDawg will adjust to the width of
your board and has pads to protect the board rails from the straps.
A strap to tie down the front of the board is included. Tying down the front of the board is highly recommended when you're on longer trips. Always check your tie-down job to make sure your boards are secure before you start driving.
